Our Department

Lancaster Chemistry is a recently founded Department—our first cohort of undergraduates started in October 2013. While our size may be small, our ambitions are not.

We have attracted a diverse (and expanding) team of research-active staff from leading Universities, who are leaders in their fields. We share a commitment to excellence in teaching as well as research. Our staff consists of both new lecturers and experienced academics, creating a vibrant community of which our students are an essential and integral part.

Lancaster Chemistry has received significant investment from the University. As part of this, a major multi-million pound building redevelopment programme is underway, to provide us with new, modern, well-equipped facilities for teaching and research, together with an impressive range of instrumentation and equipment to support our ambitious teaching programme and research activities.

Although we are relatively small for a research-led Department, we benefit from small class sizes, and thus a highly competitive staff-to-student ratio. As a Lancaster Chemistry student, you will benefit significantly from this; the individual attention from our approachable, friendly (and expert) staff, who are keen to help with any aspects of your course. The small class sizes also add to the sense of community between students.

Although Lancaster University is rated highly in all of the current University league tables (both nationally and internationally), Lancaster Chemistry does not yet appear in the subject-specific league tables. This is not a reflection of our status, quality or ambition. It is simply because we are new!

It will be some time before we appear in any Chemistry league tables; many of the criteria on which they rank departments of course involve the student experience, the quality of our teaching, and our research portfolio. As we mature as a Department, our commitment and excellence in these areas will become clear.
